What’s going on – Summer Guide 2022

Its that time of year where the lucky jet off to warmer climates in search of sunshine, relaxation and no rain! However for those who will be staying more local this summer there is still loads going on that you can partake in with like minded people.

Should activity based adventures be your ‘thing’, Andy Allen Veteran Services NI (AAVS) are coordinating a number of family friendly veteran camping weekends at their newly established Veterans Activity Centre in Banbridge. Over the course of the summer AAVS will take the fuss out of camping and provide everything you need, at no cost. All you need to bring is food and any other comfort items you might like. Available dates, 22-24 Jul, 8-12 Aug, 22-26 Aug, 23-25 Sep.

A typical weekend would look like this:

Friday – Arrive any time after 1400 hrs on Friday and get your camping equipment. BBQ & Craic that evening.

Saturday – Activities day including bush craft, kayaking, archery and more. Saturday evening at your own disposal.

Sunday – Sunday morning kids games with check out at 1400.

If this sounds like something for you why not give Dennis a call on 07399 866140 or email dennis@aavsni.com

If camping is really not your idea of a fun weekend away, and there are those who have spent far too any nights under a poncho in the past there is plenty of other options. The Northern Ireland Veterans Support Office can put you in touch with local veteran friendly groups for any thing from Veteran Breakfasts, coffee mornings, craft groups, men sheds, horticultural courses (our office are experts in weed growing) however Charlie Marno of the Defence Garden Scheme is the man to talk to for a garden that even the Chelsea Flower show would be proud of.

Lets not forget those veterans who perhaps need a little bit of support over the summer period. There are online Mental Health First Aid courses being run for those who want to help friends, family and fellow veterans, and for those who need help, there is help available. For more information on anything mentioned, contact the Northern Ireland Veteran Support office either by phone, email or via their website.
