A Spectacular Celebration of our Armed Forces at Newtownards Airfield – Armed Forces Day 2025

On Saturday, 21st June 2025, Newtownards Airfield played host to this year’s Armed Forces Day, proudly hosted by Ards and North Down Borough Council. With an estimated crowd of over 40,000 attendees, the event was a vibrant celebration of the UK’s Armed Forces and their role in our communities.

An Unforgettable Day

Dry, breezy weather set the stage for an action-packed day. The highlight was a full aerobatic display by the RAF Red Arrows — their only performance in Northern Ireland this year. Crowds also enjoyed a thrilling demonstration by the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team, impressing spectators with their precision and bravery.

Fun for Everyone

From military exhibitions and funfairs to live music and cookery demos, there was something for everyone. Children tried pull-up challenges, families met the Irish Guards’ Irish Wolfhound mascot, and the day ended with a traditional beating retreat ceremony.

Honouring Service

More than entertainment, Armed Forces Day is about recognising the dedication of our Armed Forces community. In attendance was David Johnstone, the Northern Ireland Veterans Commissioner, who spent time meeting with veterans and engaging with the many charities that support them year-round.

A Tradition of Tribute

Northern Ireland traditionally celebrates Armed Forces Day a week early to accommodate key displays like the Red Arrows, kicking off Armed Forces Week across the UK. This timing ensures strong attendance and a chance to properly honour those who serve.

Thanks to everyone who made this year’s event such a success. We look forward to welcoming you back in June 2026 for another inspiring celebration.
