Bringing Veterans Together: ‘From Basra to Helmand’ Reception at Belfast City Hall

3 October 2025

On Thursday 25th September 2025, the Northern Ireland Veterans Commissioner’s Office had the privilege of hosting a special reception at Belfast City Hall for veterans of Operation TELIC and Operation HERRICK.

This annual event, this year supported by Belfast City Council Veterans’ Champion Councillor James Lawlor and the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Tracy Kelly, has become a significant date in our calendar since it was first introduced in 2024. Its purpose is clear, to connect with veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns. This cohort of former service personnel can sometimes be more difficult to reach here in Northern Ireland, and it’s important that we reach out and engage I meaningful ways where we can.

An Evening of Connection and Recognition

The evening brought together veterans in one of the most historic and iconic buildings in Northern Ireland. Guests were welcomed with a private tour of City Hall, followed by an address from the Lord Mayor, who offered warm words of gratitude and recognition for their service.

The reception also included a light supper and the opportunity to network, share stories, and strengthen bonds of friendship. This sense of connection is at the very heart of the event, creating a space for veterans to come together in ways that might not otherwise be possible.

A Special Guest: Phil Campion

We were honoured to be joined by Phil Campion, former SAS soldier, author, and broadcaster, who gave a candid and inspiring talk about his life and career. Phil’s reflections on service, resilience, and life after the military struck a powerful chord with the audience.

A particularly poignant moment came when Phil recalled his involvement in Operation Barras, the 2000 mission to rescue Royal Irish Regiment soldiers taken hostage in Sierra Leone. Among the audience that evening was one of the soldiers rescued during that operation, creating a deeply meaningful connection between past and present, and a reminder of the lifelong impact of military service.

Thanks and Reflections

The Northern Ireland Veterans Commissioner’s Office would like to extend sincere thanks to Councillor James Lawlor for his support in facilitating this important event, to the Lord Mayor for her warm welcome, and most importantly, to every veteran who attended.

For many, leaving the armed forces marks the beginning of a new chapter, but the sense of camaraderie and family forged in service never truly leaves. This reception serves as a reminder that while we may not see each other every day, the bond remains strong, and it is vital that we continue to nurture it.
