Response to Legacy Petition

It is encouraging to see the incredible public response to the petition. To have reached 100,000 signatures in under two weeks clearly demonstrates the strength of feeling across our communities on this deeply important issue.
A petition of this scale is a powerful exercise in democracy, it reflects the collective voice and feeling of citizens who are asking not just to be heard, but to be genuinely listened to.
Should a debate be granted in Parliament, it will provide a vital opportunity to highlight widespread concerns surrounding the current government policy on legacy. Many feel that the existing approach does not adequately address the complexities or sensitivities involved with fairness. It is essential that we work towards a process that is both balanced and fair, ensures there is no rewriting of history, and that veterans & other security personnel are provided the respect and recognition that their service during the Troubles rightly deserves.
